Sea Level Simulator
Simulate sea level rise and its impact on coastal areas worldwide. Powered by CGIAR-CSI SRTM elevation data and SCALGO hydrological flood modeling, explore how sea levels from -1m to +100m redraw global coastlines, submerge lowlands, and reshape continents.
Global Sea Level Impact Scenarios
Explore how varying degrees of sea level rise correspond to climate equilibrium states and human civilization milestones.
Simulates lowered global sea levels prior to recent anthropomorphic heating or during cooler glacial fluctuation stages.
Projected near-term high emission trajectory by 2100. Routine high-tide flooding of sunny streets in Miami, Venice, and Jakarta.
Triggered by rapid disintegration of West Antarctic marine-terminating ice shelves and accelerated Greenland peripheral ice loss.
Complete disappearance of southern Florida, large portions of Bangladesh, the Netherlands coastal ring, and Shanghai lowlands.
Multi-century equilibrium state under sustained elevated atmospheric CO2 levels, submerging lowlands and shifting continental shorelines.
Catastrophic melting of the entire Antarctic and Greenland ice caps. Complete redrawing of Earth's continental maps.
Methodology & Hydrological Modeling
Unlike simplistic “bathtub” models that flood all terrestrial pixels below a given elevation regardless of inland topography, this visualization employs SCALGO’s hydrological flow engine. A terrestrial cell is only marked flooded if it is hydrologically connected to the open sea or ocean basin without natural or artificial terrain barriers blocking water intrusion.
Elevation Source (SRTM 90m v4.1)
Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model provided by the CGIAR Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI). Provides continuous global topographical coverage between 60°N and 56°S latitude at 3 arc-second (approx. 90-meter) resolution.
WMTS Tile Service & EPSG:3857
Tiles are requested dynamically over the Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) specification in Web Mercator projection across zoom levels 0 through 14. Modifying the sea-level threshold sends updated dimension query keys to the tile generator to refresh inundation contours in real time.
